The Importance of Self-Awareness:
Part 1 of 3
Personal growth develops through intentional living: by deliberately giving thought to who we currently are, who we want to become and what we are deliberately doing each day to grow into our ideal self.
Personal growth begins with self-awareness.
In order to have self-awareness, you need to take an inventory of who you are today. This inventory includes assessing not only your skills and talents, but also understanding your values, your learning and thinking styles, along with your natural communication style. This is powerful information about yourself that helps you understand why you do what you do; and how your brain processes information.
We each have a primary learning style in which we absorb information best; then our brain has to process the [raw] data we’ve taken in to create understanding; and then application. Learning isn’t complete until we’re able to apply the knowledge we’ve gained.
When we understand the best method for us to absorb information (auditory, visual or kinetically (tactile) it’s better and faster for us to use that method to learn. Knowing the various tools that can help with each learning style is ideal so you’re able to find resources to serve your best learning. Consider if you, your coworker or child, has had difficulty learning and felt stupid and wanted to give-up: what if you found out the difficulty wasn’t that you (or they) are stupid, but simply that the data that was being fed to you was not in the best perceptive mode for your learning style. When you change the method of learning to match how your brain works best, suddenly everything is easier!
Understanding your primary thinking style is also beneficial as it is good to understand how your brain is processing the lessons you’re learning. Understanding if you are a theoretical, literal, experiential or intuitive thinker helps to understand how you process the data you’ve absorbed. It’s a powerful and freeing process to understand how you are wired! Suddenly you’re able to grant yourself more grace and love. Suddenly you can understand why somethings come easier to others: because of their learning style and how the data was presented.
Other beneficial information that helps you better understand yourself is to discover your family genetics and the environment, traditions and patterns in which you grew up. Your childhood environment had a major impact on defining the programming in your subconscious mind that impacts all your choices; and what keeps you living your life in auto-pilot mode. Do you realize you’re thinking and choices are limited by your subconscious? It’s true.
